DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) in Media, Entertainment & Sport
From Television to film, Music, Media, Entertainment and the sports industry, it is a known fact that the media and allied industries is a multi-billion dollar industry that has a large number of businesses working to provide content.
The huge network of different indices that makes up the industry presupposes that there is an acknowledgement of the diversity inherent in it and an intentional effort towards creating a just and inclusive environment within the industry, but this is not the case. There is still a lot of work to be done in entrenching the culture of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the work/business culture of companies within the industry.
The DEI gaps and challenges
We all consume media content throughout the day, from the morning newspaper articles, to the midday television shows and the evening football, so it is a challenge that the diversity in the consumer base of the industry is not reflected in its general business culture.
Creating a fairer, equitable and much more inclusive work environment for diverse kinds of people involved in the media industry is not negotiable, as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color), LGBTQ+, Women, Non-binary and persons living with disability + other underserved and underrepresented groups deserve to move from being underrepresented and underserved in an industry that they constitute a huge part of; as consumers.
It is therefore imperative that the problem of racial inequality, unconscious bias and stereotyping that exists in the media, sports and entertainment industry is addressed by business leaders and major players within the industry.
What is the D.I.M.E.S. CSR 2.0 intervention?
D.I.M.E.S. (Diversity In Media, Entertainment, Sport) is a CSR 2.0 (Corporate Social Responsibility) program and initiative designed with a special focus on providing strategic and innovative DEI support to media and allied industry players, companies and organizations, with a view to creating a lasting impact for a radical but sustainable change in the work culture that encourages racial injustice, inequality and general discrimination of persons who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, (and) People of Color), LGBTQ+, Women, Non-binary and persons living with disability + other underserved and underrepresented groups, while enthroning the tenets of diversity and inclusivity within the media, entertainment and sports industry.
The need for the D.I.M.E.S. intervention
Creating a fairer and safer space for everyone to thrive in is a necessity that should be prioritized in the media industry. This is because it is unjust and even illegal for anyone to be judged unfairly, denied opportunities, left out or even have to deal with subtle or direct threats in their workplace because of their race, ethnicity, life experience, gender, sexual orientation, ability or disability.
There is a need for a robust implementation of DEI within media industry workplaces; from having a DEI team that ensures a strict compliance with policies that requires that everyone on set or in a media office is treated inclusively and fairly to portraying diverse casts and members in all kinds of work!
